The Pledge

The Pledge 2026

This renewed version of The Pledge Programme has been developed in response to growing demand from schools participating in the Leave Your Mark Confirmation Programme, and due to the significant rise in vaping among young people. There is widespread concern that many young people are now facing what can be described as a vaping crisis, and The Pledge represents a timely opportunity to encourage, guide, and support Confirmation candidates in making informed, healthy, and positive lifestyle decisions. In recognition of current challenges, vaping will now be named explicitly within the revised Pledge prayer. The programme is also designed to be fully inclusive for all students, regardless of religious background. Those not preparing for Confirmation will be invited to reflect personally and to make their own commitment — for themselves and their families — to choose a healthy lifestyle and to avoid vaping, smoking, or consuming alcohol at least until they reach eighteen years of age.
The programme weaves the Gifts of the Holy Spirit throughout each module, showing young people how these gifts strengthen them, guide their decisions, and support them in choosing healthy, life-giving paths. Recognizing how each gift can support them when facing peer pressure, vaping, smoking, alcohol, or other risky behaviours. Connecting their confirmation preparation with real-life decisions that shape their future. Reflecting on how faith, character, and personal values help them choose a healthy lifestyle.
